Ireland finish second with help from local athletes

Three Kilkenny athletes were part of the successful Ireland team which finished second in Banka Bystrica, Slovakia, at the weekend. Eileen O’Keeffe had a season’s best of 68.25m to take second place in the hammer. Aoife Hickey finished seventh in the shot with a put of 11.86m and Joanne Cuddihy ran the second leg of the third placed 4X400m relay team.

Lanigan stars in Celtic Cup

Athletics Ireland enjoyed great success in The Celtic Cup competition held this year in Carmarthen, Wales. Overall victory was achieved by Athletics Ireland as a result of the girls’ teams taking first place in both under-16 and under-18 cups and the boys under-16 in third place and the under-18 boys in second. Mary Kate Lanigan, KCH, made a substantial contribution to the victory with first place in the under-18 high jump (1.70) and also on the final leg of the victorious 4x300m relay team.

Medals galore from Tullamore

It was an action packed weekend in the Tullamore Harriers Stadium for the under 12 to under 19 national juvenile track and field championships. The heavy rain on Saturday afternoon and the very blustery and showery weather on Sunday may have wet many but failed to dampen the spirit and enthusiasm of the athletes. With a fine haul of 17 All-Ireland medals (six gold, seven silver, and four bronze) it was a weekend to remember.
