Ballina Town Council briefs

Independent Ballina town councillor Peter Clarke will travel to Scranton, Pennsylvania, to represent the town at its St Patrick’s Day parade on March 13. He was proposed by Cllr Francis McAndrew and seconded by Mayor Mary Kelly. Independent councillor Gerry Ginty told the meeting: “As one who usually objects to these type of trips, I don’t to this one as there is only one person going and with Cllr Clarke out there promoting the Clarke Collection, it could have a major pay off in the long run to the town.”

A 31-year-old father of five, who breached a protection order and assaulted his wife, was jailed for six months at Claremorris District Court this week.

New long stay car park for Ballina causes some debate

The proposed new long stay car park for Ballina, located at the soon to be vacated Ballina Town Council depot at Bachelors Walk in the town saw the town engineer, Michael O’Grady, and Mayor Mary Kelly clash over inviting the sole objectors to come in and discuss their objections with the council. Mr O’Grady told the council that only one couple put in a submission on the part eight report to the council and that it was more of an objection than a submission. He outlined the issues raised in the submission and his response to each of those issues, which included safety concerns, visibility concerns, anti social behaviour, noise issues, and potential use of the car park by boy racers.

Ginty hits out at planners’ views on visual impact

Independent Ballina county councillor Gerry Ginty this week hit out at planners’ interpretation of planning guidelines at the Ballina electoral area meeting. The meeting was discussing two planning applications. Planners had cited the visual impact of the house as a reason for the refusal.
