Galway senior football qualifiers this weekend
Salthill-Knocknacarra v Micheal Breathnach
Senior panel call ups
The Galway hurling team management of Anthony Cunningham, Mattie Kenny and Tom Helebert have drafted in three members of last year’s All-Ireland minor winning team to their squad ahead of next Sunday’s division 1A relegation clash against Dublin in Tullamore.
Cunningham focuses on youth
Anthony Cunningham, the new Galway senior hurling manager, has not been long in making his presence felt, as he and selectors Tom Helebert and Mattie Kenny have dropped one third of the team which started the All-Ireland quarter-final against Waterford this year in a massive clear-out.
Maigh Cuilinn hurlers in winter wonderland
The Maigh Cuilinn intermediate hurlers continued on their merry way last Sunday when they had a good win in the provincial final over a competitive Four Roads (Roscommon) in Athleague.
Maigh Cuillinn’s next hurdle is the Connacht final
Newly-crowned Galway intermediate hurling champions Maigh Cuillinn head to Athleague (2pm) on Sunday to take on Four Roads in the Connacht final.
Underdogs Maigh Cuilinn take on Killimordaly in intermediate decider
Maigh Cuilinn, under the guidance of Fergal Clancy, take on Tom Monaghan’s Killimordaly this Sunday (2pm) in Athenry in the county intermediate hurling final.
Salthill issue championship warning
Salthill/Knocknacarra have only won the Frank Fox Cup on two occasions, 1990 and 2005. However, based on the displays they have produced over the past few weeks, few could argue they are the team to beat this season in Galway football.
County football quarter-finals on this Sunday
Following a hectic weekend of football action last Saturday and Sunday, three of the county football quarter-finals are down for decision this Sunday. There is a double header in Pearse Stadium with Carraroe taking on Milltown at 3.45pm and Salthill/Knocknacarra facing Moycullen at 5.30pm. Claregalway, who saw off NUIG last weekend, take on championship favourites Corofin in Tuam at 5.30pm. The outstanding quarter-final between Tuam Stars and either Cortoon Shamrocks or Mountbellew/Moylough and Micheal Breathnachs could not be fixed due to the ongoing shenanigans with Mountbellew/Moylough’s appeal.
Club football championship resumes this weekend
Fourteen of the 16 teams left in the county championship are scheduled to be in action this weekend. There is a double header at Pearse Stadium on Saturday evening with the other five games fixed for Sunday. The Cortoon Shamrocks and Micheal Breathnachs fixture cannot go ahead as Mountbellew/Moylough continue with their ill thought out appeal process. They have been beaten twice on the field of play this season already and they should just move on from those defeats. Four of Sunday’s games are down as double headers at Corofin and Tuam, with Carraroe and Annaghdown on in Pearse Stadium. There will be extra time in any of the games that end in a draw.
Killererin possess too much guile for Moycullen
This was a game that Moycullen will really regret losing. They had some great goal opportunities to put themselves into the county semi-final, but they did not take any of them.
