Mayo go looking to skin the cats

image preview

While they are far better known for their small ball game, the black and amber Cats from Kilkenny are standing in Mayo's way of reaching the All Ireland Junior Football Championship final tomorrow afternoon in Tullamore. Kilkenny who only field a football team at junior level have progressed to this stage of the competition after winning the British junior crown, travelling over and back to Great Britain for all their games this summer so far. In the final of that championship they saw off the challenge of Scotland to book their final four spot.

The cornerstone of success

Colm Boyle has become one of the most vital cogs in Mayo's domination of the Connacht champoinship over the past four years, and he has an all-Ireland U21 medal in his back pocket from 2006 when the current Mayo management team of Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes guided Mayo to victory. But the quest for the big one goes on still for the man from the borderline, and his 2015 adventure gets up and running properly on Sunday when they head to Satlhill to take on Galway.

The last time Mayo faced Monaghan in the National Football League was four years ago, they lost out to the Ulster men by two points in the village of Inniskeen. Mayo’s visit back then to the home of Patrick Kavanagh gave them plenty of food for thought and set them off on an adventure that would see them reach two All Ireland finals and two All Ireland semi-finals over the next four summers.

Time to work out the kinks

The three week break in the National league came at a good time for the Mayo footballers and for joint managers Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly. It will give them time to work on certain issues that were so badly exposed by the Tyrone blanket defence, however it still did not detract the doubters and the critics from expressing their obvious concerns.

"The great thing about the league is that you can get and take lessons from the league and it’s not as disappointing as the championship as you haven’t three or four months to think about it and go over it. We’ve a game in three of four weeks to rectify it, which is great,” said Donal Vaughan on Monday evening this week, as he reflected on the previous day’s loss to Tyrone. Vaughan was speaking at the launch of the Sports Injuries and Sports Medicine Clinics (SISM Clinic), seminar on “How to improve your teams’ speed, performance and reduce injuries” which will take place on Thursday February 19 in the SISM Clinic in Moneen Industrial Estate in Castlebar at 7.30pm. Guest speakers on the night will include Vaughan, former Mayo manager James Horan, and broadcaster Timmy McCarthy.

Let the battles commence. With the greatest respect to the FBD league it all starts in earnest for Mayo on Sunday when they travel to Killarney to take on All-Ireland champions Kerry. The FBD league did show one thing, that Mayo are a little bit behind in terms of preparation after succumbing to a well prepared Roscommon outfit in the final game.
