Race week off to a flying start
The eyes of the racing world are on Galway this week, as attendance figures are eagerly awaited by many involved in the industry. Almost 117,000 people attended over the seven days in 2022, and any decrease on this figure for the 2023 festival would be in contrast to overall attendance figures at race meetings for the first six months of this year. Statistics released recently by Horse Racing Ireland show a 7.6% increase in attendances for the first half of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022.

Back for a second year following its instant success last year, Classic Fest has already become a must-attend show for lovers of all things vintage and classic. Over 25 classic car clubs are travelling to the event from Donegal to Cork and Kerry to Carlow, so almost every county will be represented in Galway Racecourse this Sunday.

The entry list for the 2023 Corrib Oil Galway International Rally has been revealed and it contains a stunning line up of drivers and machinery. Over 150 drivers have entered the traditional season opener in the West of Ireland, and it looks like being one of the most competitive ever seen. Top seeds by virtue of winning the Tarmac Championship last year are Josh Moffett & Andy Hayes in a Hyundai i20 R5. This crew also won Galway last year to set them on the way to championship success. Behind them are Meirion Evans & Jonathan Jackson with the Welsh pair using their usual VW Polo and looking to go one better than last year in Galway where they pushed Moffett all the way to the end.

The National Breast Cancer Research Institute together with Galway Racecourse have announced that their recent ‘Race in Pink’ fundraising event hosted at Ballybrit on Sunday October 30 together with the ‘ Win a BMW’ car raffle that occurred on the day, raised a staggering € 276,321 for the charity, a fitting way to end the year for all involved.
