Holy Guacamole

Famously, USA Presidential hopeful, Donald Trump, is no fan of anything originating from Mexico. We in Ireland, however, feel differently about this. Mexican food, one of the biggest food trends of the last decade, shows no signs of slowing down here just yet. Just a few short years ago we got what passes for Mexican food from a yellow box in the supermarket. The finished product often appeared to have already been eaten by someone else. If you attempted to make your own, shopping for chili peppers was an adventure, avocados were an oddity and tortillas were totally out of the question. Latin-American foods such as nachos, chips and salsa, fajitas, quesadillas, burritos and beans are now an everyday sight on the dinner tables of Ireland and have become as common place as bacon and cabbage.

1916 - don’t believe everything they tell you

The 1916 Rising did not end on April 29 when Pádraig Pearse issued the order to surrender. Many are still fighting it, or, to be more accurate, fighting against it, and, as with any war, the first and most prolonged casualty is the truth.

The Galway Volunteers

There was a lot of excitement and expectation as Eoin McNeill, Roger Casement and Pádraic Pearse told the packed hall that their main objective was to win Home Rule but the movement was also formed to protect them from the Ulster Volunteers. The meeting, which was chaired by George Nicholls, was a major success and some 600 men joined up that evening.

Mitchels’ hearts broken in Croker

Mayo supporters left Croke Park yesterday with that all-too-familiar feeling when Castlebar Mitchels saw their dreams of becoming the third Mayo side to claim the Andy Merrigan Cup go up in smoke as a classier Ballyboden St Enda’s side eased home to claim the All Ireland title on a score of 2-14 to 0-7 in GAA headquarters.

Heartbreak for Mitchels again

image preview

It was a devastating loss for Castlebar Mitchels when they came up against a far superior and prepared Ballyboden St Enda’s yesterday. The comprehensive 13-point victory, wasn’t at all flattering on the Dublin men. Despite all the hype around Castlebar and through Mayo over the last few weeks, the huge support that came out to back them left Croke Park with heartbreak once again. From as early as the first minute when Colm Basquel burst through the Castlebar rearguard to finish in fantastic style, Castlebar were in trouble.
