Galway camogie will feature prominently in a new thrilling fly on the wall series on the All-Ireland senior camogie championship, won in stirring fashion by the Tribeswomen in August.

The recipients of the 2025 Galway People of the Year Awards, organised in partnership with Basil Holian of Watchman Holdings, were unveiled at a press reception in the Galway Bay Hotel over the weekend.

I was perched up on Level 7 in Croke - the press area located in the upper Hogan Stand - ahead of the 2022 All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship semi-final between Galway and Kilkenny. Among a cohort of national journalists, many of whom tend to drift in and out of the camogie scene, there was a usual air of passing interest.

The Tribeswomen have not been in action since late June, when they overcame Waterford in a top of the table clash in Kenny Park. That win booked their passage straight through into the semi-finals.

Niamh Mallon and Aoife Donohue opened the scoring for Galway in the opening three minutes. Orlaith Hull, Derry’s only scorer of the first half replied with Derry’s opening score a minute later.

Galway will be looking to continue their winning start to the league campaign this weekend as they go to Waterford on Saturday, March 1 with throw-in at 2pm.

These end-of-year bashes are fun but they’re just not the same without a silver guest of honour.
