Westport Civic Trust public lectures return
Westport Civic Trust’s public lecture programme will commence on Tuesday October 17 this year at 8pm in the Walnut Suite in the Plaza Hotel. Dr Michael O’Connor, historian and author of Caribbean slave owners and other lesser-known histories from County Mayo, will give a lecture on ‘Clew Bay Slaveholders’.

New public art project to be launched at Wesport estate

A new public art commission is set to be unveiled at the Tubber Hill housing development in Westport next week. All is Well, a visual art installation by Cathal McCarthy and commissioned by Mayo County Council Arts Service, will be officially launched at on Saturday October 7 2pm by Damien McGlynn, director of CREATE. All are welcome and refreshments will be provided.

Visual artist Cathal McCarthy has been working in collaboration with local poet Mary C Reilly and residents of the Tubber Hill housing development on this visual arts and poetry project. Cathal, Mary and other local artists have facilitated arts workshops with residents and friends exploring the theme of ‘Living on the hill’. Activities have included creative writing for adults and young people, poetry reading, rapping, circus skills, painting and sculpture.

Redevelopment for Belmullet District Hospital

Minister of State Dara Calleary has confirmed that a project brief is to be prepared that will set out the redevelopment of Belmullet District Hospital. Minister Calleary received the news from the Office of the Chief Officer, Community Healthcare West, in response to representation made on the matter recently.

Deputy Calleary said: "I am pleased to confirm that progress has been made in the proposed redevelopment of the Belmullet District Hospital site. It is proposed that a project brief will be prepared that will set out the plan for redevelopment over two discrete phases.

New Dublin-Westport rail route from December

A new daily train service option from Dublin Heuston to Westport will offer Mayo commuters the chance to leave the capital at the later time of 7.35pm - rather than the current last train of 6.15pm - in order to get home - according to new plans by Irish Rail. Under the plan, passengers for Mayo on the 7.35pm (Dublin-Galway) train will be able to transfer at Athlone to catch the 21.08pm Athlone to Westport train, which should arrive in to Westport at around 11pm.
