The author of a letter dated 5th February 1847 and published in the Dublin Weekly Register reflected on the habit of country folk keeping one or two dogs in their cabins and the affection people had for their canine lodgers.

Achill Sound-Cashel Greenway extension opens

Inland Fisheries re-opens the Moy
Inland Fisheries Ireland has re-opened the Moy Fishery in Mayo, which was closed to angling 10 days ago due to elevated water temperatures. Barry Fox Head of Operations at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “We are lifting our cessation of angling protocols at the Moy and Galway fisheries. Water temperatures have reduced to appropriate levels, and when taking weather forecasts into account it is now considered appropriate to reopen both fisheries. Water temperatures and weather forecasts will continue to be monitored on both fisheries over the coming weeks.” Management at both fisheries will be contacting all anglers who have confirmed bookings over the coming days and anglers who have had fishing cancelled due to the elevated temperatures will be refunded in due course. The Moy Fishery can be contacted on 096 21332 or emailed via moyfishery@fisheriesireland.ie.

Chambers announces €7.5m funding for Daisy Lodge in Cong

Mayo Senator Chambers has confirmed that the Daisy Lodge Cancer Support project in Cong, County Mayo, can now officially go ahead, following the allocation of government funding to the development.

On Tuesday last (June 20), Senator Chamber stated: "I am delighted to be able to announce €7.5m in funding for Daisy Lodge through the Department of Health and The Shared Island Unit. The funding will be used to construct Daisy Lodge, a state of the art therapeutic short break centre for children with cancer and their families in Cong, County Mayo.
