Quigley not re-elected to League management committee

Former FAI president Pat Quigley was not re-elected to the Mayo League management committee at its AGM on Tuesday night. The end of the long standing football official’s involvement in the day-to-day running of the game in the county will have come as surprise to many after he failed to be elected to the 10 person committee at the AGM.

The election of the committee at the meeting saw outgoing members Donal Benson, Tom McDaniel, Martin Kielty, James Larkin, Padraig McHale, Gerry Sweeney, and Kieran Gallagher re-elected along with league secretary John Durkan (who automatically fills one of the positions ). The two new members elected to the committee were Sean Molloy from Achill Rovers and Seamus Hughes from Kiltimagh/Knock United.

Two rule changes were also approved at the AGM with five subs now being allowed to be used in all Mayo League competitions, and five registered B team players allowed to play with the A team, an increase of two from the previous rule. Both of the rule changes were proposed by Westport United.

The Mayo League also decided to set up a player welfare fund, starting this year, to provide assistance to players who suffer losses due to the serious injury or illness. The fund will be on top of the insurance scheme that is already in place for medical expenses for players. The new scheme will be funded by an extra €3 levy per player on top of the normal player registration, while the league will also donate all the gate receipts from this weekend’s Charity Shield season opener and 20 per cent of the net gate receipts from all its cup finals.

It was also decided that a a five person sub-committee would act as trustees of the fund, the sub-committee will be made up of two members of the League management committee, one member of the referees branch and two representatives from the clubs, one of whom should be a current player.
