Green Flag awards for 52 Mayo schools

Schools from across Mayo attended a ceremony at Breaffy House Hotel, Castlebar on Tuesday May 28. Five schools were awarded their first Green Flag while 47 schools renewed their Green Flag. Schools from counties Leitrim and Sligo also received flags at ceremonies on the day.

Sharon Cameron, environment awareness officer with Mayo County Council, extended her congratulations to the many schools attending the Green Schools Awards Ceremony: “This year we are delighted to welcome the annual Green-Schools Awards back to Mayo. This year five new schools will be awarded with their first Green Flag while a further 47 will be renewing their Green Flag status. It is so encouraging to see new schools coming into the programme each year, while previously awarded schools continue to maintain the high standards of environmental care necessary for them to renew their Green Flag Status. The combined work of the teachers, support staff, and students in all of Mayo’s green-schools is contributing in such a positive way to the environment. I extend my sincere congratulations and thanks to all of those who have given the green-schools programme a central place in daily school life.”
