Westport makes shortlist in Smarter Travel Town competition

The results of stage one of the Smarter Travel Town competition were announced on Monday by the National Sustainable Travel Office.

Westport was included in the 11 shortlisted towns to receive seed funding for stage two of the competition.

Westport will be joined by Cork city, Drimnagh (Dublin ), Dundalk, Dungarvan, Galway city and county, Kilkenny, Limerick city and county, Loughrea, Navan, and Sandyford (Dublin ) and environs.

These towns and cities will move to the second stage of the process which will require a comprehensive bid to be prepared and submitted by Friday April 30. The successful towns and cities will be announced following assessment of stage two bids in summer 2010.

Welcoming the news, Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council councillor Myles Staunton said: “This is another example of successful partnership and community action in Westport.”

Town manager Peter Hynes added: “The success of stage one is a most welcome Christmas present and Westport will look forward to mounting the best possible campaign for the second stage of the competition in the New Year.”
