Progress being made on Castlebar Tourism Projects

A number of tourism projects being managed by Mayo County Council are being progressed in the Castlebar Municipal District, according to the Tourism, Recreation & Amenity Section of the council, which has provided the following Tourism Update which will form part of the agenda of the Castlebar MD area meeting on Wednesday July 26 next.

Climbing Wall

Total Budget for project - €530,918.00 which includes grant from Sports Capital of €230,918.00 and match funding of €300k. Site Surveys & Redesigns of the building have been carried out by the consultant engineers, which included consultations and agreement from ATU & Service provider – Complete; Business case for best use/ most commercially viable use of the building – Complete; Re-certification of the redesigned drawings by the consultant engineers - Complete; Re-costing of Climbing Wall – Complete; Re-costing of the redesigned building with the original QS from the Leisure Complex project – Complete; Drafting of tender documents – In progress.

The aim is to publish on the Etenders platform for the end of August 2023, with estimated project completion date Q1 2024.

Moorehall Draft Masterplan & Environmental Report

This was advertised in The Connaught Telegraph on 4th April 2023, with Observations open until 2nd May 2023 on CONSULT through Mayo.ie The timeline was extended to the 16th May 2023. Submissions are currently being assessed.

Works have commenced on the Moorehall / Towerhill project. This project is being developed in collaboration with Coillte and the National Parks & Wildlife Service. Funding was made available under Measure 2 of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

Breaffy Woods Loop Walk

Breaffy Woods Loop Walk Works are completed on the installation of a Boardwalk at the Breaffy Woods Loop Walk, Funding for this project was also made available under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme

On the 1st June 2023, The Department of Rural Community Development announced details of the 2023 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. Details of the funding schemes are as follows: Project Development Measure - Grant amount up to €50,000 for development costs so as to enable strategic large-scale projects; Measure 1 - Grant amount up to €30,000 for small scale repair/development/promotion and marketing; Measure 2 - Grant amount up to €20,000 for medium scale repair/upgrade and new trail/amenity development.

BBC Travel Journalists in Mayo

The Tourism unit facilitated a media fam trip for Travel Journalists from the BBC on the weekend of the 9th – 11th June 2023. A meeting of the Tourism, Recreation, Food & Community Engagement SPC took place on Friday 22nd June 2023.
