People of the Tribes: Meet Clíodhna.

Mon, Oct 21, 2019

Haigh, is mise Clíodhna! I was born and raised in Dublin, but I have been living in Galway since 2008. I have strong family connections to the picturesque village of Spiddal and decided to move to Galway for college, where I completed a BA in Mathematics and Nua-Ghaeilge and an MA in Nua-Ghaeilge from NUIG. I have always been interested in fashion and style, and would spend hours dressing up in my Mamó’s clothing running my own little fashion shows! I have fourteen years fashion retail experience and I am currently employed as the senior stylist and visual merchandiser in the Lanidor boutique on 30 Eyre St. One of the greatest things about working in retail is that you never know where the day is going to take you and no two days in Lanidor boutique are the same. I love helping people find their style and updating their wardrobes with new pieces from the shop. I have a very creative mind and my role in Lanidor gives me the opportunity to do a job that I am very passionate about, a place where I can let my personal creativity shine through and work off my own initiative doing a job that I love.

People of the Tribes: Meet Mal.

Tue, Oct 08, 2019

Like many people I came to Galway for a weekend and forgot to leave. Music and craic is what kept me here. The Blue Notes choir is full of both. What started out with a text has blossomed into a community of 35 beautiful melodic voices under the tuition of the wonderful Tracy Bruen. Check out the video on their page to see how much they mean to The Blue Note and to each other.

I’m Dudley Van Niekerk from Oranmore Co Galway and I’m a Big Airs Extreme Kiteboarder, owner and instructor at Rush Kitesurfing in Galway. I have lived in Ireland for almost 20 years and have spent the last 18 years in Galway. I'm also a hypnotherapist and a personal trainer. I have broken the Irish Big Airs Kitesurfing record twice in the last year and am the current national holder of the big airs record at a staggering 18,7m high. I'm an Ambassador for Cabrinha Kiteboarding, which is probably the worlds top kitesurfing brand. I love everything about Galway, the cool vibe, the awesome craft beer we have, the people and especially the fantastic prevailing South West winds we get here make kitesurfing truly amazing here. I’ve kited all over the world and I have to say that the spots we have in Galway to kite are world-class in every way and that includes deepest darkest winter. I wouldn’t wont to live anywhere else in the world. Galway Rocks.

People of the Tribes: Meet Paschal.

Tue, Aug 06, 2019

Hello, my name is Paschal, this is Socks (the Horse )... I'm a Galway man through and through, living in Craughwell, Co. Galway. I was in the defence forces for 38 years, involved in the RDF Unit or the FCA Unit and stationed in Loughrea for 15 years. For the past 26 years on and off I have brought my family, friends and the odd wedding couple around on my horse and cart. Then I started bringing tourists and the public around the city, I love doing what I am doing, it gives me great joy! There is such a great buzz in Galway, if you're in bad form and need a lift, just walk down shop street, high street or Quay street, you're sure to meet a smiling, friendly face to snap you out of it. We have some much here in Galway, the lakes, the Sea, the people and the laughter!

People of the Tribes: Meet Lorna.

Tue, Jul 16, 2019

Hey, I'm Lorna, I'm 25 and live in Galway. I'm lucky enough to have been born here and spent my life living here, both in the city where I live and Carraroe, Connemara where I did my first degree. I have a degree in media through Irish and I'm also a primary school teacher. I worked in TG4 during college, have dabbled in online journalism and have done a few art projects along the side. I'm a big lover of dance and still do ballet classes once a week in Briarhill. One could say I'm a jack of many trades, a master of none! I love working with kids, their optimism is infectious. I love all things creative and really find myself at home in Galway because of this. I recently completed a short-acting course at the Lir Academy in Dublin and loved it. I'm really excited to explore the field more, especially here in Galway. I'm currently working as part of Galway Art's Festival's Box Office Squad. It's a busy job but I love it. I feel so lucky to be part of the festival, there is nowhere better than Galway at this team of the year! My favourite thing about Galway is the opportunities it provides culturally, both within the arts and the Irish language. I'm a fluent speaker and love that I can use my Gaeilge daily in Galway. Be sure to pop into the Box Office in the Cornstore to say hi!(as Gaeilge nó Bearla!)

People of the Tribes: Colm & Caryl Mc Donagh

Tue, Jul 16, 2019

''I'm the son of a Carna man and from Renmore. Originally my life was in the travel business. I set up Colm Mc Donagh travel in 1989 down in Woodquay and One-Stop Travel here on Eyre Square. I spent a lot of years in the travel business and things were moving in a different direction, along with our lease so it was a case of a decision being made for us. Do we take out a lease for another 15 years? Was there enough business in the travel industry or go a new direction?... And so we did! My wife Caryl who worked with me in the travel business is a qualified chef and we always wanted to open up a little coffee shop. The opportunity presented itself and we grabbed it with both hands, now we have a 25-year lease and teamed up with an amazing brand - Esquire Coffee. Its all about bringing the business to you, having quality service, helping people out in times of need and not being afraid to roll up the sleeves! Galway has gotten way more cosmopolitan, the coffee culture is now like the pub culture sure. I love Galway with all my heart, I couldn't live or work anywhere else in the world.''
