Galway Women hold league leaders in Wexford

Galway WFC take a week's break from action this weekend boosted by another strong performance which saw them hold league leaders Wexford Youths to a scoreless draw.

In the last three weeks Galway have not lost a Continental Tyres League fixture, but will be anxious to start scoring more to gain on those ahead of them.

In Ferrycarrig Park on Saturday Galway, although missing nine players, were unlucky not to come away with all three points.

They were first to threaten with Lynsey McKey hitting the side netting from a Grainne Barrett corner. Then on 12 minutes Wexford Youths came close twice, first from a Kylie Murphy header and then from a Nicola Sinnott overhead kick which was punched clear by Tina Hughes.

The best chance of the half fell to Galway just before the interval. McKey whipped in a cross from the left which found an unmarked Sadhbh Doyle six yards out. However she was unlucky to see her powerful downward header bounce off the hard surface and over the bar.

Twenty minutes into the second half Hansberry hit a delightful free kick for the hosts but an outstretched Hughes did enough to divert it onto the crossbar.

Galway then applied the pressure and the Slaneysiders had their keeper Sophie Lenehan to thank a couple of times for keeping them in the game. First she dived to the right to save from a goal-bound Barret header before producing a reflex save to deny Jess Gleeson's deflection from an Aisling Meaney cross going into her own net.

With time almost up Galway’s Lucy Hannon played a delightful through ball for McKey who looked to be in on goal, but just as she shot Gleeson managed to get a foot in to block, ensuring the game remained scoreless.

This Friday attention will turn to the World University Games where Galway WFC and NUI Galway star Shauna Fox is part of the Irish squad which takes on Mexico in their opening game of the tournament.
