Beautiful mid-terrace home steeped in history

Sherry FitzGerald welcomes No 2 Ruttledge Terrace to the market for sale by private treaty. No 2 Ruttledge Terrace, Salthill, is a four bed mid-terrace home built in the early 1900s and steeped in history. Ruttledge Terrace was acquired by Michael F Joyce in 1913, and the row of five terrace houses was built between 1913 and 1924. Michael Joyce sold No 2 to the Doyle family, and the property has remained in the family for generations.

Michael Joyce was the father of William Joyce, who is more infamously known as Lord Haw Haw, the Galway man who became the voice of Nazi Germany. He is most remembered for his World War II pro-German propaganda broadcasts that opened with the words, "Germany calling, Germany calling," spoken in an upper class English accent.

In January 1946 Lord Haw Haw was the last man to be hanged in Britain for high treason. Before his execution he left a note for his second wife Margaret expressing his love for Galway and his wish for her to visit the city. “I am anxious that you should go to Galway and see the docks, Long Walk, O'Brien’s Bridge, Nile Lodge, Taylor's Hill, Lenaboy Castle, Menlo on the Corrib, but above all the stretch from Salthill to Blackrock, the Promenade where we used to live behind."

With an asking price of €575,000, No 2 Ruttledge Terrace still offers the same charm, appeal, and character that it has offered to the family over the past 100 years. It has been lovingly cared for and maintained throughout the years but the owners now feel it is time to pass this home on for the next stage of its history.

Upon entering this home you will notice that it retains some of its original features including doors, skirting, architraves, shutters on the front windows, its original cast iron fireplace in the living room, and the original timber floors under the carpets upstairs. It features a fabulous curved staircase, and high ceilings throughout.

There were two extensions added over the years; the dining room/bathroom in the 1950s and the kitchen/utility in the early 1970s. The back garden is split level and includes a patio on both the lower and upper levels. The boundaries are clearly defined by a stone wall boundary which is covered in shrubbery. A gate from the back garden leads onto Rockbarton Park, where there is extra parking available. There is also parking available to the front of the house.

Located in a quiet cul de sac, Ruttledge Terrace runs parallel to the Promenade in the heart of old Salthill next to the Salthill Hotel. It has access to all the established services including primary and second level schools, Salthill village centre, the Promenade, and a host of leisure and sporting amenities at your doorstep.

No 2 Ruttledge Terrace is a special property for many reasons not alone due to its history, but it has been a very happy home for its owners who now wish to pass it on so that its next occupants can enjoy its charms.
