From Communions to christenings, here is what to wear

In this week’s column I want to focus on the conundrum of dressing for Communion, christening, and confirmation. I believe that if you look the best you can and feel good in what you wear, you will be confident.

Colour and shape have to be taken into account when choosing an outfit. Look for what suits you best, and then apply the trends to your individual style and shape.

A day dress with a coat or jacket is an appropriate choice. There are a lots of dresses with sleeves available — cap, three-quarter, or full — in sheer textures to heavier fabrics, so there are lots of options if you want to cover your arms. The dress length should be to the knee with an appropriate neckline, not too low. With the return of the flared and the wrap dresses there are a lot more styles to flatter our silhouettes. The label Ingenue took inspiration from fashion designer Diane Von Furstenberg to create beautiful, affordable, and complimentary dresses. I particularly like this coral and sky blue number with elegant waist detail and sleeves.

There is any array of colours available, and coral, yellow, and green are coveted tones, but avoid ultra bright, unless softened with a muted shades. Spring pastels are bold and wearable. From subtle animal prints to feminine floral and geometric abstracts, choose yours a little understated to avoid being overwhelmed.

Despite my love for dresses, I am drawn to separates. They create elegant individual styles and many chic combos. Tailored cream trousers paired with a structured embellished top and jacket can go a long way. River Island currently stocks various tailored pants in muted colours, while the Daisy May label has a beautiful jacquard inspired embellished top that can be worn with a court shoes and a shaped spring coat or jacket.

When it comes to skirts, you cannot go wrong with a straight or A-line knee length style with belted top and soft metallic heels. Whether a printed skirt or solid colour, the rule remains the same: combine neutrals with more colourful hues and finish off with complementing accessories.
