On September 1, 2025, Claregalway Educate Together National School (CETNS ) will mark a remarkable milestone, 20 years since first opening its doors as Galway North Educate Together in temporary accommodation in Cloonbiggen. This anniversary is a testament to two decades of growth, community spirit, and a steadfast commitment to academic excellence and equality-based education in the heart of Claregalway village.

The journey of CETNS began in September 2005 with just 29 pupils and two staff members. Today, the school has flourished, now welcoming 220 pupils and employing 25 dedicated staff, a reflection of both the increasing demand for multi-denominational education and the school’s reputation for nurturing, child-centred learning.

This success owes much to the vision and dedication of founding principal Terri Claffey, who led the school from its inception until 2022. Her leadership laid the foundation for a vibrant, inclusive school community.

CETNS’ development is evident not just in its growing student body but in its physical transformation. The school’s early days were spent in a converted bungalow and modular buildings, making the most of limited resources. Responding to the needs of a growing community, the Department of Education approved a new, permanent building in 2019, providing modern facilities to enhance the learning experience.

At the heart of the school is The Woodlands library, which opened in September 2023. More than just a library, The Woodlands offers an immersive, woodland-themed environment where students are inspired to explore, imagine, and create. Weekly visits are eagerly anticipated, with story time, a dedicated writing space, and cosy reading nooks. The school was honoured to welcome Galway-born author and Children’s Laureate Patricia Forde to officially open the library in September 2023.

CETNS shares its campus with Coláiste Bhaile Chláir, fostering a collaborative relationship that benefits both primary and post-primary students. Joint initiatives such as Science Fest, the Creative Schools Programme, inter-school sports, TY work placements, and language learning projects enrich the educational experience and strengthen community ties.

Claregalway ETNS is also home to Wonder Years, an onsite preschool owned and run by Lorraine O’Connor. Lorraine provides a breakfast club from 8am and after-school care until 6pm, offering invaluable support to families within the school community.

The school’s commitment to holistic development is evident in its many achievements. CETNS recently celebrated wins in both Junior and Senior County categories of the national “Someone Like Me” art competition. Programmes like Lego STEM, Heritage in Schools, the Green Schools initiative, and a vibrant student council all contribute to a well-rounded education.

Embracing technology, CETNS utilises Chromebooks and Google for education tools, equipping students with the skills and confidence to collaborate, create, and learn independently in a safe digital environment.

Sport is a cornerstone of school life, with teams competing in Cumann na mBunscol hurling, football, handball, and athletics. The school’s 2017 All-Ireland primary school volleyball championship win remains a proud memory, and students eagerly participate in annual soccer competitions. Strong links with local clubs: Carnmore Hurling, Claregalway GAA, Corinthians Rugby and Claregalway Handball further enrich sporting opportunities. In 2024, a joint team from Coolarne NS and CETNS brought home silverware in the local SuperValu football competition.

The arts flourish at CETNS, nurturing creativity and self-expression. Students participate in Peace Proms, Baboró theatre, Branar performances, and art exhibitions with Anam Croí, and enjoy on-site music lessons in tin whistle, guitar, and keyboard.

Chess is another area of distinction, with county and national titles attesting to students’ strategic thinking and perseverance. Chess has become a valued part of school life, building problem-solving skills and resilience.

As CETNS celebrates its 20th anniversary, it stands as a beacon of inclusive, innovative education in Claregalway. The school’s nurturing environment, commitment to excellence, and deep community roots continue to empower children to thrive academically, socially, and creatively, making CETNS a true cornerstone of the local community.
