The Beat in Galway

One of the most original ska, reggae, punk and disco bands, The Beat, will perform at Monroe’s Live on Saturday, July 12, with doors open at 8pm.

With chart topping hits such as ‘Mirror In The Bathroom’, ‘Too Nice Too Talk To’, ‘Hands Off She’s Mine’ and ‘Stand Down Margaret’, the band stood apart from their 2 Tone contemporaries in England.

The band's debut studio album, I Just Can't Stop It, was released in May 1980 and stormed the British album charts at No. 3.

They toured the world with well-known artists including David Bowie, the Clash, the Police, the Pretenders, REM, the Specials and Talking Heads, with members of the band often collaborating on-stage with the Specials.

Lead singer, the late Ranking Roger, added a Jamaican vocal flavour to the band's sound with his toasting style.

Over the last two decades, fans around the world watched him perform with his son Ranking Jnr by his side.

The pairing was nothing short of electric, with their song ‘Side to Side’ added to the BBC radio airwaves.

Now, Ranking Jnr follows in his father’s footsteps as the lead singer, carrying The Beat’s flag into a new era with a turbo-charged live set.

Their fusion of Latin, ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock came to the fore with their other hits including ‘Best Friend’, ‘Can’t Get Used To Losing You’, ‘Drowning’, ‘Tears of A Clown’, ‘Rankin Full Stop’, ‘I Confess’, ‘Save It For Later’ and more.

With new material on the horizon, and sold-out shows around the world, The Beat’s legacy continues.
