A haven for foodies, the P Francis & Son Bar and Bistro at The Menlo Park Hotel is a must-visit for those who are searching for good, honest grub.

After weeks of stone-splitting sunshine, the return of the rain coincided with my visit to P Francis & Son Bar and Bistro at The Menlo Park Hotel. Armed with a cheap umbrella and an empty stomach, I was hunting for something hearty, fulfilling and warming, and it did not disappoint.

Welcomed warmly by the Bistro's experienced, friendly and knowledgeable service staff, we were seated in one of the large booths installed following the hotel's extensive renovations completed last year. The Bistro's interior has been cleverly laid out and decorated, resulting in a space that is both suitable for entertaining and for providing private spaces for those seeking a more romantic backdrop.

With an extensive evening menu, P Francis & Son Bar and Bistro offers something for every appetite, especially for those with gluten intolerances. Nearly all of the food served in the bistro is gluten-free, and the venue prides itself on being able to provide a trustworthy and delicious meal for those with allergies.

Sumptuous starters

Galway Bay Mussels made for a stellar opening course. Available in both small and large portions, the mussels are fresh, plump, and expertly cooked, each shell bursting with the delicate sweetness that defines quality shellfish. The white wine and garlic broth is aromatic and deeply savoury, with the wine providing a subtle acidity that lifts the richness of the mussels. Chopped scallions add a gentle sharpness and freshness to each bite, and the accompanying homemade brown bread is dense, nutty, and perfect for soaking up the last spoonfuls of the broth. The dish is both comforting and elegant, and the large portion size makes it satisfying enough to double as a light main.

The Goat's Cheese and Sundried Tomato Bon Bon is a beautifully balanced dish in both flavour and presentation. The bon bon itself, crispy on the outside, warm and creamy inside, is a delight of contrasting textures. The tangy goat's cheese is mellowed by the sweet intensity of the sundried tomatoes, creating a rich and savoury centre. The beetroot carpaccio and purée lend an earthy sweetness and vibrant colour to the plate, while the honey-glazed figs offer an unexpected pop of caramelised fruitiness that complements the cheese perfectly. Finished with a peppery rocket salad tossed in pesto and garnished with toasted walnuts, this dish is a thoughtful blend of textures and flavours that feels indulgent yet refreshing.

Marvellous mains

The Catch of the Day, a baked fillet of seabass during this visit, is a prime example of the Bistro’s ability to handle classic dishes with finesse. The fish is perfectly cooked, with crisp, golden skin giving way to delicate, flaky flesh beneath. The aubergine purée provides a smoky, velvety base, while the roast baby courgette and glazed carrots are tender and naturally sweet, adding both flavour and colour. The creamy white wine sauce ties everything together, rich without being overpowering, and enhances the subtlety of the seabass rather than masking it.

Overall, it’s a well-constructed plate that showcases the chef's skill, resulting in a dish where each component is allowed to shine.

For those seeking something hearty and plant-forward, the Sweet Potato and Red Pepper Curry is a standout. Though vegan by default, the option to add cajun chicken to the dish makes it a versatile option for those seeking a spicy, meaty curry. The chicken is juicy and well-seasoned, with a subtle heat that complements the medium-spiced curry sauce. Sweet potato and chickpeas add heartiness and texture, while roasted red peppers and fresh spinach bring brightness and depth. The toasted cashew nuts offer a welcome crunch and nutty undertone, and the dish is completed with a mound of fluffy long-grain rice and a crisp poppadum for a touch of traditional flair.

The curry manages to be both nourishing and satisfying, packed with bold, warming flavours and a variety of textures. Often the weak link in a largely non-vegan menu, the Bistro's plant-based option bucks this tradition, resulting in a dish that will likely be chosen often by vegans and meat-eaters alike.

Delicious desserts

The dessert menu at the Bistro in Menlo Park Hotel is a decadent and playful collection that caters to a wide range of tastes, with plenty of gluten-free, vegan, and indulgent options. Highlights include the Build Your Own Cheesecake, a creamy New York-style vanilla base with customisable sauces and toppings, and the Kinder Cookie Pie, a rich, over-the-top treat filled with Nutella, Kinder bars, and cookie dough ice cream.

For fruitier or lighter options, the Tangy Lemon Tart and Chocolate and Coconut Tart (vegan and gluten-free ) are vibrant and refreshing, both paired with raspberry elements. Traditional comforts like the warm Apple and Cinnamon Pie and the inventive Beetroot Brownie offer homely flavours with modern twists. Guests can also enjoy the Muffin of the Day, served with ice cream, or build their own dessert with a Selection of Ice-creams, including classics like French vanilla and creative picks like lemon sorbet and cookie dough. There’s even a full Sundae Menu offering a sweet treat that is fun, flexible, and satisfying for all.

Whether you're after a pre-dinner aperitif, a lively weekend drink, or something smooth to finish the evening, the cocktail list adds a stylish and approachable touch to the Bistro’s overall dining experience.
