Galway basketball quartet head to Romania

Four NUI Galway basketballers are heading to the FIBA European Championships in Craiova, Romania next month.

Hazel Finn and Kara McCleane return to the Ireland squad having competed in last year's tournament, while Tullamore's Ellie and Emma Glavin are also selected having been part of the University of Galway Mystics U20 Women’s National Cup winning side.

The Glavin's also featured prominently during their Women’s Super League season - Emma averaging 28 minutes per game and 7.4ppg, while sister Ellie had 3.7 points per game in just under 19 minutes per game at the top table of Irish women’s basketball.

Coached by Karl Kilbride, the 12-person squad boasts five returning players, also including Ella O’Donnell of Quinnipiac University, Sarah Hickey of Waterford Wildcats and Sinéad Keane of Trinity Meteors.

Ireland will compete in the FIBA Under 20 Women’s European Championship B Division between July 28 and August 6, and have been drawn in Group B alongside Romania, Greece and Georgia.

At 16 level, Moycullen's Orla Cunningham has been selected on the Irish U15 summer programme.
