United lose Mark Farren Cup decider at Turners Cross

Cork City triumphed on Leeside

CORK CITY 2 GALWAY UNITED 1

Ultimately the Mark Farren Cup decider ended in a cruel defeat for Martin Devlin's Galway United.

A clinical Cork City outfit pounced to score twice after the restart ensuring United were beaten Leeside.

It was harsh on the visitors', who showed glimpses of their ability, but City landed the decisive blows.

Republic of Ireland U18 international Alex Murphy, already established in John Caulfield's first team squad, was a key figure for United, who were solid during a tight opening period.

With Steven Healey and the O'Hallorans tidy in the centre of the park United enjoyed good passages of play throughout.

Ronan Bambara was splendid driving forward at right wing back, with Mikey McCullagh and David Tarmey prominent also, but United just couldn't register a goal.

Three minutes after the restart Bambara's cross found Mark O'Halloran, who forced Aaron Manxix to make a fine save.

City then struck when Liam Murray supplied the assist for Franco Umeh to score in the 69th minute.

Mannix subsequently thwarted Tarmey as United came close to restoring parity.

Cork's Liam Murray extended the locals advantage in the 83rd minute, but United continued to battle. Though substitute Liam Murray netted in stoppage time Cork were crafty enough to earn silverware.
