Jobs boost for Athlone as Affidea announces major investment

Athlone is to receive a jobs boost over the next 18 months after an announcement last Thursday (November 5 ) by diagnostic healthcare firm Affidea.

The company, which has recently been rebranded having previously traded under the name Euromedic, will make an investment of more than €15 million over the next year and a half, creating 100 jobs in Athlone, Donegal, Limerick, Sligo, and Tallaght.

The jobs, which will be a mix of clinical and administrative roles, will be spread across clinics current and new. This will include an enhanced presence across Dublin and a new presence across the west coast and Midlands.

Affidea has had a major impact on primary healthcare since its establishment in Ireland in 2007. Its presence in the market significantly increased the availability of diagnostic services to patients. This increased capacity enabled costs, such as that of MRIs, to fall dramatically to a current average cost of €250 today.

Speaking at the launch, Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: “I am delighted to welcome the announcement of 100 new jobs at Affidea Ireland. Affidea’s investment and expansion are a vote of confidence in Ireland’s economy and a positive development for the primary health care sector here. The Government will continue to work to secure the recovery so that companies like Affidea can grow and create more jobs.”

Tom Finn, CEO of Affidea, said: “I believe that today marks the beginning of a primary healthcare evolution for Ireland. The creation of over 100 new jobs means that our current and new clinics will be able to serve a greater number of patients, quickly, professionally, and to the highest of standards.”
