The Radisson Hotel Athlone was the location for the recent hosting of the Fine Gael Longford-Westmeath general election selection convention, during which Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Deputy Peter Burke and Senator Micheál Carrigy were chosen as the political party’s constituent candidates.

Speaking post event Minister Burke expressed his delight at being once again selected by Fine Gael to contest the next general election.

“I am delighted to again be selected by Fine Gael Members to contest the next General Election, whenever that might be. It is an honour to be selected to run for Fine Gael at the next General Election, alongside my good colleague Senator Micheál Carrigy.

“It continues to be a privilege to represent my community in Dáil Éireann and at Cabinet. As a busy constituency Deputy running weekly clinics, and as Minister for Enterprise, I have a keen awareness of the issues and the challenges facing people, families and businesses.

“I am looking forward to engaging more with people on the doors ahead of the local and European elections on June 7 and in the months ahead,” Minister Burke said.

When pressed for a date for General Election, Minister Burke refused to be drawn on the matter.

“The Government are fully focused on the critical issues that are facing our country at present, Housing, Business Supports, Law & Order, Education, Health. We will do our best to deliver for the constituents and address the concerns that make real differences to peoples lives.

“I am taking a leading role for Small and Medium Businesses and pushing for additional supports to maintain our solid base of the business community throughout the country. We have the track record, our budgets balance and we have the skills and vision to continue improving lives in every sector of our community.

“Congratulations to Senator Micheál Carrigy and I am looking forward to working together on an exciting period ahead.

“Thank you to guest chairperson, Minister Martin Heydon, for facilitating the convention and to Maria Walsh MEP who also addressed the gathering,” Minister Burke concluded.
