Westmeath underage squads endured development squad testing in TUS Athlone on Saturday last

Following the conclusion of the open training sessions for Under 14, Under 15 and Under 16 hurlers and footballers last week, the 2024 squads for each age group in both codes were selected, with all parents/guardians informed.

Congratulations to all those who were selected and hard luck to those who didn’t make it. It is hoped to run the Lakers’ programme for players who did not make the squads and this will offer players the opportunity to improve their game and possibly get back into a squad.

Thanks to all players who attended the open training sessions. It is important for players to understand that each individual will develop at different rates and once they keep working on their game, they can improve and experience success.

Development Squad Testing

The indoor arena in TUS Athlone hosted the Under 14, Under 15 and Under 16 development squads in both hurling and football on Saturday. All players were put through their paces in a series of tests that will act as a baseline for their development in the coming months. Thanks to all staff, coaches and S&C leads for running the tests, and to TUS for hosting.

Coach Mentorship Programme

Westmeath Coaching and Games held the first seminar of its Mentorship Programme on Saturday in TUS Athlone, with the coaches attending being shown how players are profiled through testing and how this informs training plans for underage teams.

Thanks to Kieran Martin and Alan Mullen for conducting the presentation and showing the practical elements with the development squads. The next seminar is scheduled January 13 in Rosemount with the themes being coaching philosophy and how to build resilience. Coaches who wish to sign up can get the link from their club coaching officer.
