Athlone GAA Club has confirmed the return of the club’s underage training on Sunday March 12 from 10am-11am.

Registration of new players will also take place on the morning in the Pairc Chiaráin clubhouse from 10am-11.30am. Athlone GAA offerS coaching to boys and girls aged four plus at the club’s base on the Ballymahon Road (N37PW42 ), the team of coaches looking forward to welcoming the return of existing players and hoping to meet many new faces also.

The main focus of underage training is to teach young boys and girls the basic skills of gaelic football in safe and fun environment. Participation and inclusivity are central to the club’s outlook. Young boys and girls learn the ABC’s (Agility, Balance, Co-ordination ) while making lots of new friends.

An increase in numbers and a desire to offer the best coaching possible has resulted in the appointment of Westmeath Senior Footballer Robbie Forde as the club’s Games Promotion Officer. As well as offering coaching in local primary schools, Robbie will be on hand to oversee coaching sessions and to offer assistance to existing coaches as well as training and advice to new coaches. Former Dublin star, Darren Magee, is the club’s Coaching & Games Officer.

In addition to recruiting new players, the club are also seeking to recruit new coaches/mentors. One doesn’t need to have any background or knowledge of gaelic football to become a coach/mentor. A positive attitude and some patience are amongst the main skillset required in order to help out, with the ability to tie shoe-laces a welcome bonus!

While all of the clb’s coaches are volunteer,s it is a very rewarding experience and the more coaches we have the better experience we can offer youngsters. Community is the cornerstone of the GAA and Athlone GAA are keen to develop that sense of community for families. Aside from football the club has many different activities during the year including participation in the St Patricks Day Parade, Easter and Summer Camps, Family Fun Day, as well as numerous other social activities and outings.

The new fully equipped club gym is available for use by all club members both playing and non playing.

The underage coaching season runs from March 12 to late October with no training on bank holiday weekends. Whether you are new to town or just have not had the opportunity to visit Athlone GAA previously, club representatives would love to see you on Sunday March 12.
